A new technology demo of the Dune desert presented on Unreal Engine 5.3

MAWI United has published a video with a new technological demonstration of the Dune Desert landscape for Unreal Engine 5.3. The video shows a part of the desert with an area of 400 square kilometers.

Apparently, this is a new area of the Dune Desert project, which the team presented back in January 2023. As the name suggests, the project has been updated to Unreal Engine 5.3.

As far as we know, both Lumen and Nanite are used in the Dune Desert demo. Most assets use 4K textures. In addition, up to 1 million polygons were used for palm trees, 1-2 million for rocks and debris, and 4000-2000 for plants.

The result looks impressive. However, you will need a really powerful PC to run it. The demo on UE5.1 squeezed all the juice out of even the GeForce RTX 4090. The most productive NVIDIA video card was unable to run it smoothly in 4K at 60 frames per second.

The bad news is that you can’t download the demo version. MAWI claims that there is a link on their website to download a working demo. However, there are no free downloads. Instead, you’ll have to pay $3.99. This is unfortunate, considering that MAWI previously provided free download links for its demos.
