Amazon will close its Amazon Drive cloud storage service soon . The company has announced that the service will be retired in 2023. Instead, Amazon Photos, the cloud service dedicated to photographs – which is also included in the Amazon Prime subscription, will continue to remain active.

Amazon Drive was born as a larger service. An alternative to Google Drive and Dropbox to conveniently store images in the cloud, yes, but also documents and other files. Amazon Drive was first unveiled in March 2011. After 12 years of honored service, it will close its doors forever.

It is unclear why Amazon has decided to pull the plug on the cloud storage service . It had probably not been able to reach a high enough number of users to continue to justify its existence.

From January 31, 2023, Amazon Drive will no longer allow the upload of new content. Users will have virtually exactly one year to secure their content. Yes, because from 31 December 2023 it will no longer be possible to view and download documents and photos saved in the cloud.

“We will continue to provide customers with the ability to securely backup, share and organize their photos and videos with Amazon Photos ,” the company promised.
