Baldur’s Gate 3 developer is amazed that the RPG is still so popular: “644,205 players is still crazy to me”

Yes, sure, Baldur’s Gate 3 was popular last year when it became the biggest role-playing game and won all the awards, but with a million other games coming out every day, are people still playing it? It turns out yes.

Michael Dawes, publishing director at Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian, posted the game’s current player statistics to X this week:

644,205 average daily players over the last 7 days is still insane to me at this distance from launch (Steam only).

This is an extremely impressive number, especially considering that, as Dawes notes, these players are “Steam only” and doesn’t take into account those playing the game on PS5 or Xbox.

It’s also a rare insight into what the average daily player count looks like for a game like Baldur’s Gate 3. Tracking of concurrent players for Steam games is done on external sites like SteamDB, but it’s only a partial metric that tells us how many players there are is in the game at a certain point in time. If a game’s popularity spreads across different parts of the world, for example, you will only see peaks in the number of players. Average number of players per day is a much more reliable and meaningful metric of success.

Whatever metric you measure Baldur’s Gate 3 by, it’s clear that the role-playing game was a stunning success story that catapulted Larian into the public spotlight. Although the studio has its name in a long line of CRPGs, Baldur’s Gate 3 has taken the niche to a level of explosive success not seen since The Witcher 3.
