Digital Foundry expert praises re-release of Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered

John Linneman from Digital Foundry has published a technical analysis of the re-release of Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered from Aspyr Media. The journalist was pleased with the work done by the studio, calling the remasters carefully thought out and well-tailored.

The collection of remasters offers players an original picture and a modern one. You can switch between image types at any time. Aspyr also added a modern control layout, but if you wish, you can return to the old one.

  • Linneman noted that Aspyr perfectly updated the visuals of the first three parts of Tomb Raider – the studio left the original design, environment, levels and geometry unchanged, only updating the picture, models, textures, lighting and animations

  • AI was used to upscale textures and other aspects, but Linneman did not call the final result hacky – according to him, Aspyr’s hand is visible

  • In Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered you can also switch menus, music and sound effects – original options and updated ones are available

  • PS5/Xbox Series X – 4K/60 FPS

  • Xbox Series S – 1440p/60 FPS

  • Nintendo Switch – 1080p/720p at 60 FPS

  • Steam Deck – 800p/60 FPS and 90 Hz

  • On PC and Steam Deck there are no graphics settings at all – probably due to the minimum hardware requirements of remasters

  • The classic picture mode is locked at 30 FPS and at the same time protects from uneven frame pacing

Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered is available on PC, both generations of consoles and Nintendo Switch.
