Don’t remember what happened in the first Dune? Here’s a short description

Looking forward to Dune 2 but confused about the character names? Do you remember how Kwisatz Haderach differs from gom jabbar? Unfortunately, Dune 2 won’t help you with this. Luckily, we have the answers!

Below we present a summary of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune to be ready to watch the sequel.

Warning: the following contains spoilers for Dune. If you haven’t watched the original, it’s available on Netflix.

The most important planet in the Dune universe is Arrakis, ruled by the noble House Harkonnen in the empire of Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV (Christopher Walken). Arrakis is an incredibly harsh desert world whose inhabitants actively resist imperial rule, but it is also the only source of the spice melange, without which interstellar travel is impossible.

While the spice is mined, the Travelers’ Guild ensures travel and trade, the noble Houses govern their domains, the Emperor maintains peace with a fanatical army, and the mysterious Bene Gesserit order mysteriously facilitates political alliances and negotiations.

In Dune: Part 1, we were introduced to House Atreides Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac) and his concubine Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson). And the Bene Gesserit secretly planned to breed the messiah doll Kwisatz Haderach in 10,000 years to seize control of the galaxy. But Jessica and Leto fell in love, and she gave birth to his son, Paul (Timothée Chalamet).

The film’s plot begins with Emperor Corrino taking the hard work of harvesting spice from Arrakis from House Harkonnen and giving it to their mortal enemies, the Atreides. This is a cover for his true plan – to secretly lend an army of Sardukar (elite troops) to House Harkonnen to kill the Duke and his family, defeating House Atreides and retaking Arrakis. The reason is that Leto’s popularity became a threat to the imperial dynasty. Thus, his family will be destroyed through civil strife, and not by imperial order.

Much of Dune concerns the move of the Atreides and their retinue, including swordsmen Duncan Idaho (Jason Momoa) and Gurney Halleck (Josh Brolin), from their rainy oceanic homeland to the deserted Arrakis fortress capital of Arrakeen. There they face the planet’s unique threats – giant car-eating sandworms, sandstorms and water shortages. They are looking for an alliance with the locals – the Fremen, their leader Stilgar (Javier Bardem). And Paul’s psychic abilities are enhanced by the ubiquitous spice, and he begins to experience visions of galactic war and Fremenka.

As a result, Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård) unleashes his rude nephew Glossa Rabban (Dave Bautista) on Arrakis with the imperial army of Sardukars. The Atreides are not ready and their troops are destroyed. Only Paul and Jessica appear to survive the massacre thanks to Duncan Idaho’s sacrifice.

They flee into the desert and find Stilgar, who agrees to protect them after Paul defeats one of his warriors in ritual combat – and because he believes that Paul may be the Mahdi, the long-awaited messiah of the Fremen (an idea introduced into their culture by the Bene Gesserit centuries ago). . Stilgar’s niece Chani (Zendaya) turns out to be the same girl from Paul’s visions. Meanwhile, Jessica is pregnant with her second child with the late Leto.

This is where Dune 2021 comes to an abrupt end. In the short term, Paul and Jessica must find their place among the Fremen. But if they contact the outside world, their story – of an Imperial conspiracy with one House to destroy another – will destroy Corrino’s rule and plunge the galaxy into civil war.

But thanks to the visions, Paul also knows that they are rushing towards a turning point in galactic history. Will Paul be able to prevent the dream war? Is he the Mahdi? Kwisatz Haderach? Or just a young man who finds himself in a position to use both thousand-year-old legends?

Dune 2 aims to answer these questions.
