First meeting in months after Blinken and Lavrov

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov made contact for the first time since February 24, when the Ukrainian war began.

In the phone call that took place last night, the possible prisoner exchange between the two countries and the Ukraine war were on the agenda. Informing the press about the meeting, Blinken said, “I insistently emphasized to the Kremlin that they accept our offer for the release of Britney Griner and Paul Whelan .” Stating that the allegations that the Moscow administration is preparing to annex some regions of Ukraine were also discussed, Blinken said, ” If Russia continues these plans, we will apply additional sanctions.”
