Viren Swami, a psychologist at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, carried out a study on the impact of hunger on people. The experiment was done on 64 subjects between 18 and 60 years old. For three weeks they recorded emotions and feelings of hunger 5 times a day, using an app. The data were related to age, sex, body mass, character and eating habits. As a result, hunger makes even people who are calm by nature aggressive and irritable. Hunger was linked to 37% irritability, 34% anger and 38% pleasure. Data demonstrating the influence of mood on nutrition.

Feeling hungry is associated with feelings of anger and lower levels of pleasure. It follows that negative emotions are related to the degree of hunger that an individual feels. Many times it happens to be angry or nervous without knowing why. Recognizing the cause of negative emotions allows you to do something concrete to reduce or eliminate them.

We chose a field approach where participants were asked to respond to requests to complete short surveys on an app. These messages were sent five times a day on semi-random occasions over a three week period. This allowed us to generate intensive longitudinal data in a way not possible with traditional laboratory research.
