Meal delivery platform Uber Eats teams up with autonomous vehicle startup Nuro for meal deliveries
Meal delivery platform Uber Eats has partnered with autonomous vehicle startup Nuro for meal deliveries. Under the deal, Uber will use the delivery vehicles of autonomous vehicle startup Nuro for 10 years. The partnership will take effect in the autumn of this year. Autonomous delivery vehicles will start delivering food from the California region. Nuro has obtained all necessary approvals and permits to operate an autonomous vehicle delivery service in California. That is, Uber will be able to charge for every autonomous delivery made.
Nuro has recently come to the fore with its collaboration with Walmart and Kroger. It also announced in May 2020 that it would cooperate with CVS Pharmacy to bring medicines to homes. The company came to the fore with a new collaboration about a year later . Domino’s Pizza announced that it will deliver its products with an autonomous delivery robot .
In November 2021, the autonomous vehicle company received an investment of $600 million from Tiger Global Management and Google. It is said that with this investment, the value of the company will increase to $ 8.6 billion. Led by Tiger Global, the Series D tour was attended by Baillie Gifford, Fidelity Management & Research Company, Gaorong Capital, Kroger, SoftBank Vision Fund 1, T. Rowe Price Associates, Woven Capital and Woven Planet.
Tiger Global partner Griffin Schroeder said, “The way we access products has changed with the development of e-commerce. Nuro is the bridge to the era of sustainable, low-cost, autonomous local delivery,” and expressed how important the company is to the industry. Founded by Dave Ferguson and Jiajun Zhu in 2016, Nuro started a 5-year partnership with Google Cloud in addition to the investment.
