“Shazam! Wrath of the Gods ” earned $30.5 million in the US in its opening weekend, a 44% drop from the first part of 2019. The film grossed $65.5 million worldwide.
The sequel to “Shazam” was predicted to have a weak start, but the tape could not even reach the projected 35-38 million dollars. On top of that, it also managed to undercut Birds of Prey at $33 million, which had one of the worst openings for a DC movie in a decade as of its release in February 2020.
The chances of significant growth also look unlikely. If the first “Shazam” received 90% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” rating on CinemaScore, then “The Fury of the Gods” has only 53% on Rotten Tomatoes and a viewer rating of ” B + ” on CinemaScore, like Black Adam, and the latter was able to put on a strong opening weekend but dwindled heavily over subsequent weekends.
Shazam: Wrath of the Gods is one of four old DCU films made before James Gunn and Peter Safran joined DC Studios.
The Flash and Blue Beetle are also due out this summer, and Aquaman 2 is scheduled to release in December. The DCU then waits for a restart. The first in the updated universe will be Superman: Legacy, written and directed by Gunn himself. The release of the tape will take place in July 2025.
