“The aim of the plan is to save gas for the winter in case Putin decides to cut gas supplies to Europe because of the sanctions,” Spain’s ministry of ecology told public television, Joan Groizard, head of the country’s Institute for Energy Conservation and Diversification. He has already confirmed this.

The law, passed last week, also requires shops to turn off window lighting from 10 p.m., a decision that also affects the lighting of public buildings.

HOW TO AUDIT?

The government revealed the details of the plan in May as part of an EU-wide effort to reduce oil and gas dependence on Russia after it invaded Ukraine in February.

The European Commission plans to reduce the EU’s dependence on Russian gas by two-thirds this year and end Russia’s dependence on fuel supplies before 2030.
