Google often drew attention by introducing playable logos containing ingenious ideas. This time, we introduced a logo with an editor that allows you to create your own game with simple editing.

On December 1st, Google unveiled a logo to commemorate the birthday of Gerald ‘Jerry’ Lawson, a game developer active in the 1970s. At the time, he was one of the few black developers in the game industry, but he worked as a chief hardware engineer for Fairchild Channel F, a home console that could be called the original game pack. The key is to devise cartridges that allow you to switch between games on your device.

Taking advantage of his achievements, an editor element to edit the game was introduced in the Google logo. After briefly dealing with Lawson’s life in the prologue, you can enjoy mini-games such as a 2D platformer with retro graphics, breaking bricks, and solving puzzles. You can also edit each mini-game to create your own game.

When you enter the editor mode, you can place objects such as enemies, blocks, jumps, etc., and change the game graphics to the style you want, just like replacing a cartridge. It’s not difficult to make, and it can be done with just a click of the mouse, so anyone can get the experience of making their own game.

The doodle was created in collaboration with Lawson’s children and game designers Davione Gooden, Lauren Brown, and Momo Pixel.
