26 km of the A1 motorway become smart , thanks to a collaboration between Autostrade per l’italia and the Volkswagen Group. The project for the moment concerns the section connecting Florence South and Florence North – in both directions – and the Bologna hub.

Movyon , a subsidiary of Autostrade per l’Italia, has installed a communication system between the vehicle and the V2I infrastructure . Users equipped with the latest generation cars will be able to receive information in real time, staying updated on queues, accidents, emergencies and any other complications, including weather events. This is a first glimpse of the future, because tomorrow such infrastructure will cover the bulk of Europe’s motorways. Sure, it will take years.

In the future, constant communication between cars and roads will simply become fundamental for mobility, even more so if you imagine a future where cars will be equipped with completely autonomous driving.

For the moment, all motorists driving a Volkswagen equipped with Car2X systems , present in the price list on all the company’s new latest generation electric cars (but not only), will benefit from the V2I.

The project, already illustrated to the Minister for Sustainable Infrastructures and Mobility and its technical structures, is part of the Mercury Program, a platform created within the Autostrade per l’Italia Group to create a large unitary and coordinated hub for technological innovation in the infrastructure sector. Mercury aims to accelerate the contact between the demand for sustainable mobility and the offer, through innovative and coordinated solutions to effectively respond to the great challenge of modernizing and making the network more efficient.
