Tesla Model Y is the best-selling electric car in Europe. But the market has little to celebrate: to find a worse June, you have to go back to 1993.

The European electric car market has a new queen: it is the Tesla Model Y , which took the place until recently occupied by the Model 3, also Tesla. This was revealed by the latest Jato Dynamics bulletin .

The overall picture, however, is anything but happy: registrations of SUVs and electrified cars – which had led the recovery in early 2022 – are down. SUVs are down 7% and electric are down 8% year-on-year. Between BEV and PHEV there are 215,000 registrations across Europe, up from 233,000 units last year. To want to see the glass half full – and it is important to do so -, it must be pointed out that the electrified ones continue to eat market share from the other segments of the market, with a market share that has grown by as much as 20%.

Expanding the photograph even further, we discover that 1,054,807 cars were registered in Europe in June 2022, again in sharp decline compared to June 2022, when there were 1,268 million units. That’s a sharp drop of 17%. It was the worst month of June since 1993.

We then come to the ranking of electric: in first place there is the Tesla Model Y, protagonist of the production of the new Gigafactory in Berlin. Tesla has registered 16,687 units. FCA follows with its electric Fiat 500 (7,269) and then the Tesla Model 3 (6,176).
