Zaporizhia warning from UN: Any attack would be suicide

Referring to the weekend attacks on the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, Guterres said, “Any attack on the nuclear power plant would be suicide. I hope the attacks will end and at the same time the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) can access the plant.”

Speaking without blaming any party for the attacks, Guterres said, “We support the IAEA’s ongoing work to stabilize the situation at the plant.”

Speaking at a ceremony to commemorate the victims of Hiroshima on Saturday, Guterres warned that a new arms race is gaining momentum, adding: “It is absolutely unacceptable for states with nuclear weapons to accept the possibility of nuclear war.”

Calling for a commitment to nuclear disarmament, Guterres said, “Get the nuclear war option off the table. It’s time to make peace prevail.”

Kyiv and Moscow continue to blame each other for the attacks in Zaporizhia, which fell under Russian control in the first days of the war.

In a written statement made by Energoatom on Telegram, he claimed that Major General Valery Visiliev from the Russian army said, “We have laid mines on all important facilities of the nuclear power plant in Zaporozhye”. “Russia is blackmailing the whole world,” the statement said.

The power plant was damaged as a result of the attack, which was carried out at a point close to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. After the attack, Ukraine blamed Russia, while Russia blamed Ukraine. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), emphasized that the attack in question endangered both Ukraine and many countries around it, and that such attacks should be avoided.
