Dragon’s Dogma 2 fans are trying to unravel the cause of the Dragon Plague – an in-game disease is killing Pawns and NPCs, so some quests disappear completely

It’s only been a few days since the release of Dragon’s Dogma 2, and despite incredibly positive reviews from critics and records on Steam, not everything is going smoothly. The other day there was a wave of discontent over the proposed microtransactions, and now there is also mass panic due to the existence of a deadly plague that can lead to the death of NPCs in the city.

The in-game disease is called the Dragon Plague, and we knew about it before launch – but it wasn’t clear until release how deadly it would be. According to the game’s official website, it is “a disease that Pawns contract when traveling between worlds,” and according to lore, it will “lead to a devastating disaster” once the symptoms “reach a terminal stage.” Well, it didn’t take long to realize that these consequences are not a myth; when the symptoms progress too far, you can lose your entire city.

One Pawn killed 99% of Vernworth. All the guards? Dead. Citizens? Dead. \[…\] Lost about seven side quests. Forever. This Dragon Plague is without a doubt the worst mechanic I’ve seen in a game.

Oh, one of the Pawns was infected with the Dragon Plague and just killed everyone in Vernworth, and it triggers when you stay at the inn.

As Capcom mentioned, the plague can spread between infected Pawns, meaning it is possible to become infected without knowing it by recruiting an affected Pawn. Understandably, as more people experience this, concern is growing – players are afraid of missing out on quests, while others are simply wondering why this was implemented in the first place.

Imagine that you are a new player with 20 hours of progress. You hire a new Pawn without knowing what the hell this Dragon Plague is. You go straight to bed to do quests during the day. You wake up and ALL NPCs ARE FUCKING DEAD. \[…\] This needs to be reworked or removed completely. It’s a pointless, thankless feature that deserves to be cut from every playthrough.
