GameStop and Game Informer: rain of layoffs coming

GameStop in the storm: the company announces an avalanche of layoffs. The jobs of the staff of Game Informer, a historic specialized magazine, are also at risk
GameStop will leave a large number of employees at home. At the same time, the retail gaming giant fired its CFO , Michael Recupero.
For years GameStop has started an important phase of change. The company, which in 2021 was the protagonist of an important rally on the stock exchange led by the phenomenon of the so-called meme-stocks , is gradually moving away from the brick-and-mortar model, with the aim of focusing more on the sale of goods and services. digital.
GameStop sent a note to its employees on Thursday, announcing a major new wave of layoffs . “We want to streamline our workforce, in order to make sure that the right talents are in the right place,” reads the communication.
We do not know the details of the staff reduction plan and therefore the number of workers who will lose their jobs is not known. The bulk of the layoffs should, however, relate to the company’s headquarters, which is the offices in Grapevine, Texas. The staff cut should therefore mainly affect white-collar workers, while there does not seem to be any interest in reducing the number of workers employed in the company’s stores. Not immediately at least.
The company, again in the note sent to employees, confirmed its ambition to focus on NFTs and the so-called Web 3.0 – a term used to refer to a heterogeneous set of decentralized platforms and services based on the blockchain.
According to the Axios media outlet, the staff cut should also concern Game Informer, a historic gaming magazine owned by GameStop.
